What should I expect from my first visit?
Your first appointment is typically 60 minutes unless we have agreed upon a shorter or longer session prior to booking. During this session, we discuss your history, your concerns and the symptoms that brought you to us. If you have any relevant medical letters or details you would like to share, you can bring these to your first appointment.
After our history taking, we will do an initial assessment which normally includes a postural screen, an external review of your spine, pelvis, hips, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles. Depending on your symptoms, we will offer an internal vaginal/rectal exam to assess muscle strength, tone and function of your pelvic floor muscles.
The internal exam is not a requirement and is entirely subject to your consent. If you would prefer to wait until a future session or not to do it at all, that is absolutely fine. We can still proceed with treatment. If you require a chaperone for your appointment, please notify the clinic ahead of time so we can arrange one for you. If you require a chaperone for your appointment, please notify the clinic ahead of time so we can arrange one for you.
After your initial assessment is complete, we discuss our findings and work together to develop a plan of care that meets your needs and helps you achieve your goals.
What should I wear to my first appointment?
You should wear something comfortable and easy to move in.
Can I bring my baby to the appointment?
Of course. We ask that you bring a blanket or mat for them so we can set up an area where they are comfortable and happy to play while we work. If you need to feed your baby during your session, that is absolutely fine as well. We work around you and your baby’s needs.
How long should I wait to book a postnatal physiotherapy or Mummy MOT session after giving birth?
We recommend you book you first postnatal session between 4-6 weeks after you give birth. If you require immediate support before 4 weeks, please contact us directly and we can discuss booking an appointment. Please note, we will not perform an internal vaginal exam until at minimum 6 weeks postnatal. However, we will do an external examination if appropriate.
Should I still come to my physiotherapy session if I am on my period?
Treatment while you are on your period is entirely up to you. We are happy to continue with your pelvic floor assessment and treatment if you are comfortable. We can also modify your session to focus on external techniques and exercises that suit your comfort level.
Of course, you can always reschedule your appointment for another time.
